About Mara Safari Lodge – MSLK

The name “Mara” is derived from the Ik dialect, meaning “How are you?” — a reflection of our respect for and connection to the local culture and communities.

Mara is inspired by the Ik tribe, one of Africa’s smallest and most endangered ethnic groups, with a population of fewer than 10,000 people. Traditionally hunter-gatherers, the Ik were displaced in the 1960s to create Kidepo Valley National Park and now reside in the Morungole Mountains along the Uganda–Kenya border.

Our name is a shortened form of “Marang”, symbolizing welcome, connection, and cultural preservation.
